Structure
Breaking Structure
Thomas Kellner
Thomas Kellner is a German photographer who deconstructs buildings by taking photos of structures in hundreds of photos and then putting them all together in a contact sheet. He uses a single-lens reflex camera with 35 mm film steps each consisting of 36 photos put along in strips to then put the image back together.
For this task, we were required to imitate the work of Thomas Kellner by deconstruction buildings with our digital cameras and then putting them back together in contact sheets using adobe bridge |
in this task, I think I managed to reconstruct the buildings quite well by Abe to make them so recognizable in post-production. However, If I had managed to make the exposure the same on every photo so they work better together and also if I had been able to zoom into the buildings more and as a result be able to divide the building into more photos.
Arena and EPOCH
These pieces by brothers Padraic McGloughlin and Kevin McGloughlin called Arena and EPOCH explore the similarities between international roadways as well as the similarities between structures such as farmlands and cities
|
|
In this task I wanted to replicate the work of the McGloghlin brothers however not to do something too similar. I decided to get an image from a tiny settlement from 6 out of the 7 continents of the world to show how similar they are in terms of six about also the differences in terrain
Structure of nature
Myoung Ho Lee
For this task, we were asked to recreate the work of Myoung Ho Lee by taking photos of individual plants with a white sheet behind them to make them appear isolated with nothing behind them. As well as this another component of the task was making sure we had the correct aperture so that the background was in focus as well,
|
Upon reflection of this shoot despite the images being of very poor quality I began to learn a lot with regards to outdoor and nature photogrpahy as well as understanding depth of field and focus much more after the shoot, in relation to the work Myoung Ho Lee i achieved little in emulating her work as she isolates her nature from its surroundings greatly as if she was putting them upon a canvas, I did not manage this in the slightest however it should be acknowledge that the task was near impossible with the size of canvas we had in comparison to Myoun Ho Lee's
Sanna Kannisto
Sanna Kannisto is a field photographer who collects plants to take a closer look at them. However, where Sanna breaks away from scientific conventions is the fact that she presents her plants in the context that they are being shot and shows the tools used that make her able to take the photos. This is unlike science as they often present their images devoid of context or how they took them.
In this shoot, I managed to achieve emulating the work of Sanna Kannisto to some extent as I captures the plants very vividly as well as what was holding them up. However upon reflection, it would be worthwhile to re-shoot with more dynamic and interesting plants, similarly to the documenting work of Sanna Kannisto
Roxanne Worthington
This series of photographs known as ' Breath' is about showing how delicate side of flowers. she does this by pressing the plants down with a glass and projecting them straight onto photographic paper with a bright light. she uses a long exposure and high aperture to maximize the brightness which allows the light to travel through the thin parts of the flower showing the plant's skeletal structure.
|
My response
In this task, the objective was to look at and respond to the work of Roxanne Worthington, specifically her shoot 'Breath'. I think I achieved this to some extent by trying to print through the leaf to show its skeletal form underneath. However if I had exposed the leaves for even longer then perhaps the leaf's skeletons would have been more prominent, as well as this if I had perhaps used more interesting plants once again the images may have been more developed.
Juana Gomez
Juana Gomez response
For this response to the work of Juana Gomez, I attempted to weave human interior structures onto images. At first, to understand where to embroidembroider the images I drew an outline of the fiblres and veins I wanted to draw onto an image printed on paper, then for a first attmeptfibers, I embroidered, onto the paper image to see what it would begin to look like. Finally, I embroidered onto the print on the cloth using a finer needle and fabric - this had the effect of showing the fibers in the neck as well as trying to show the veins that run along with the shapes of the body.
2 Strands
1st Strand
Laura Zalenga
Laura Zalenga is a German photographer who specilialises in self-portraiture. her images focuse in visual emotional imagery. Her series of images through a kaleidescope where a series of photographs done in order to see how every milimeter of the images is reflected thorugh the mirrors and how it changes through the movment of the mirrors.
For this strand I wanted replicate the work of Laura Zalenga and demonstrate how objects and light can create interesting looking structures via patterns of different coloured papers and objects being illuminated onto mirrors. I did this by building a kaleidoscope which is a prism of mirrors that create interesting and cool structures on the inside to look at. Building the kaleidoscope was difficult as it took time to figure out what length i should cut the mirrors and how to incorporated light and colours into them and still being able to take photos of the inside. In the end i found that the best kaleidoscope were short ones that let in as much light as or a really long on that let in very little light which allowed me to use a much longer exposure time.
|
In this first development I think for a first attempt at trying to take images through a homemade kaleidoscope it worked quite well as I managed to create interesting coloured light structures, as well as this I managed to keep certain parts of the images blurry and she in focus which in turn emphasises certain parts of the image. However if some of the images were slightly brighter and the colours were more refined and clear cut between each one which may make the structures of the colours and the light streaks more clear.
2nd strand
Irving Penn
Irving Penn born in 1917 started out as a freelance fashion photographer, however in 1943 one of hist still lives was used as the cover of vogue for the first time in recent years. IN 1989 at an exhibition of his work at a skull exhibition he described the cranium as "an exquisite edifice of living machine, hard chambers of bone to guard soft organs, protected conduits and channels"
In this task I wanted to replicate the work of Irving Penn however add a twist with the use of flowers around and inside the skull itself. I wanted to do this to show a contrast between life and death within the mage and the structural comparison between them.

Upon reflection, I think I managed to capture the skull's shape quite nicely as well as using the torch to illuminate certain areas of the animal which I think made a difference to the areas that the eye was drawn towards. However, if I had managed to add more flowers to the images and maybe lain=d the skull on a bedding of flowers the image may have been more effective.
First Development 1st strand
For this development, I wanted to instead of just using random thins to photo I wanted people and buildings. As well as this instead of using a kaleidoscope I used a pair of glasses in which the glass was layered and colours to create the effect of multiple layers as well as distorting the colors of the image.
In this development, I think the effect that the glasses achieved is quite cool and the multiple layers it creates going off into the distance is quite interesting. However, if the subject I had photographed had been more interesting the images may have been slightly more interesting as currently, they are okay because of the effect the glasses give.
Second Development
For this development I wanted to focus on a human subject for this shoot and see how the pentagon kaleidoscope distorts various aspects of the human. During this shoot I found out the to capture the reflections I needed to make the camera further away from the kaleidoscope or I would not get very good fro reflections. As well as this for this development I wanted I used a a light to draw and try and make interesting reflections on the kaleidoscope.
In this development I think I managed to capture some interesting reflections of various parts of the human head especially for the one of the eye as the subjects movement created a very interesting effect of glossing the eye over.
However If I had managed to create better kaleidoscope images for the whole face shots with the swirling light as unfortunately they lost their kaleidoscope feel somewhat ad were replaced by the light rather than having both.
However If I had managed to create better kaleidoscope images for the whole face shots with the swirling light as unfortunately they lost their kaleidoscope feel somewhat ad were replaced by the light rather than having both.
Third development
In this task I wanted to try and use a mirror box and place flowers within to create an infintiy effect within the box. As well as this I wanted to try and show all sides of the flowers within one image and therefore the complete structure of the flowers refelcted within the glass.
Upon the reflection on this shoot, I discovered that it was very difficult to capture the infinity effect without having the camera within the image as,as it was lowered it would get caught within the mirrors. However
Fourth Development
For this development of my chosen strand within structure, I wanted to develop the idea of multiple layers of structure. I chose to do this by photographing buildings through the kaleidoscope that I built in central London.
As you can see in my two edits above I think the effect with the buildings was quite effective, especially regarding the light within the images and the multiple reflections you get within the mirrors. As well as this I think the changes between the mirrors being in focus and the buildings being in focus is quite effective as it changes the structure that the viewer focuses on.
Fifth Development
In this shoot, I decided to repeat the shoot of the city kaleidoscope but this time in nature to see how the structures might change with natural structures and landscapes rather than man-made structures and cityscapes.
Once again I think the shoot was quite effective in showing the different structures that are formed through the mirror's opinion within the kaleidoscope as well as the interesting changes that can be seen with the changes of focus. In my opinion for this shoot although the subject of the focused image may be more interesting I think that the unfocused one achieves the structure concept better as it almost creates an upside-down landscape reflected in the mirrors.
Sixth development
For this development of my Kaleidoscope I wanted to try and use flowerpot demonstrate the repetitive nature of nature and the fact that the same plant can produce almost identical flowers repeatedly. I tried to capture this with the use of a pentagon kaleidoscope rather than a triangular one as it allowed me to reproduce the object more times as well as making it easier to photograph with a larger whole to take the image through.
The images in this shoot turned out quite well, especially the ones using the colored filters as they give the photo even more of a kaleidoscopic feel. However, If the photos had been exposed slightly lighter to make out the flowers I used slightly more as well as using flowers with more color to perhaps make the images slightly more interesting.
Final Piece
For the final piece of structure I wanted to incorporate all the things I had learnt about taking photos through Kaleidoscopes and looking at the work of Olafur Eliasson and his giant outdoor kaleidoscope and try and emulate that in someway with nature. My idea to use a pentagon; Kaleidoscope rather than a triangular on came from Olafur's massive structure of a pentagon Kaleidoscope as well as the thought of taking photographs of natural subjects rather than pieces of coloured paper or a Person.
However unlike the images you get from Olafur Eliasson's machine I chose to take very close up photos of a few flowers whilst using light and filters to influence the colours of the images as well as enhancing certain colours that certain flowers already had . |

Contact sheets
For the initial shot I wanted to make it clear what I was shooting and what I was shooting through to demonstrate both the similarities and differences in my work and the item and using and that of Olafur's machine and the images that were taken through that. For example because of the differences in sizes the two kaleidoscopes what I could physically take a photo of was somewhat limited therefore resulting in the image below which although it does reflect the subjects within. the kaleidoscope there are limitations to how many reflections there are as well as what can fit in the kaleidoscope itself. Moreover for this particular photo I did not use extra lighting and filters to keep it simplistic and show exactly what I was doing which is similar to Olafur as his is simply just put outside and people can see what exactly there that day rain or shine.
Final pieces
For the this photo I chose to play a torch underneath the kaleidoscope and flower and then place a blue filter on top of that in order to create a colourful effect on the flower but especially the mirrors. Moreover I like the way in which the light pushes through the the outer leaves of the flower causing them to glow. This images contrasts quite heavily to Olafur's kaleidoscope as unlike in his images the singular flower in this is very isolated and almost appears lonely as it appears leaning to one side rather than standing up straight surrounded by other trees in a great forest like the trees that appear in Olafur's kaleidoscope.
For my Final Piece of Structure, I wanted to try and show as many structures as possible within one image and reflect my developments throughout the project all the way back to the work of Roxanne Worthington. First off I chose to make the light as strong as possible here to try and shine through the thin petals of the flowers to see their inner structure, then you have the outer structure of the plant itself, next to the structure of the light bouncing between the mirrors and then finally the structure of the reflection of the flowers themselves within the mirrors. As well as this I wanted to somewhat highlight the danger that nature is in with the prominent use of the red filter at the bottom for the light to shine through. Overall I thought my final image and edit is very effective in conveying the them of structure I tried to develop throughough my project.
