Photograms
What is a photogram?
A photogram is an image produce by shining a light on light sensitive paper in order to produce an image with various objects that contrasts between the black card and the white areas produced by the objects blocking light from the paper.

What is a darkroom?
A darkroom is a room in which someone can develop film by avoiding white light and using red lights to keep the light sensitive paper from being exposed and consequently changing colour yet allowing the white light onto the paper when wanted, therefore developing the film.
How is a darkroom set up?
A darkroom is set up by being completely blacked out except for red lights. Then the enlargers which allow you to shine light onto the photographic paper which allows it to turn black after being put into the chemicals. The enlarger has both a normal light and a safe light. The safe light its a light that is also red that makes sure the photographic paper does not develop prematurely. Inside the darkroom there a various trays in which chemicals are held in order to do different jobs. In the first tray there is a chemical called developer which you put the paper in after it has been exposed which actually causes the paper to develop from white to black. The next tray has a chemical known as stop bath which stops the paper from getting even darker stopping the chemical reaction from continuing.Lastly the final tray contains a chemical know as fix which clears the paper up after going through the previous two chemicals. To move the paper from one chemical to another you use print tongs to avoid touching the chemicals.

Exposure test
To achieve the correct exposure you need to control both the aperture and the time on the enlarger.
Test strip
A test strip is a method of exposing the light in which you go along the card changing the amount of time the paper is exposed each time therefore changing the contrast on each card.
Which exposure is best?
In my opinion the best aperture is f16 for 6 to 7 seconds.

Painting on developer
painting on developer is when instead of placing the exposed paper into the developer you paint it on exposing certain areas more them others and adding a cool effect.
Double exposure
This is when you expose the the paper once and then move the object and expose it a second time creating a effect that makes the image look as if it s grey and moving.

Pin Hole camera
What is a pinhole camera?
A pinhole camera is a camera without a lens that uses a tiny aperture. Light from the scene passes through the tiny hole onto the back of the camera where light sensitive paper is being held and prints an image of the scene onto the paper. To create our camera we used an old can and cut the top off. Then we created a removable seal for the top of the can so that no light could get through.Next we poked a pin through the centre of the can which allows the light to hit the photographic paper and then we attached electrical tape over the hole so we can chose when light hits the photographic paper. To use a pinhole camera u need to put a piece of photographic paper in the can in an environment that does not expose the paper to white light. Then you find the thing you want to take a photo of and point your camera at it. then remove the electrical tape and expose the paper for as long as you want(this can vary depending on the brightness of the light outside) then put the electrical tape back over the hole and go and develop the photo. Pitfalls of a Pinhole camera is that you can only take black and white images and it takes a few toys to et the light right as the light can change very quickly changing the amount of light the paper is exposed to.f |
Different types of photos
Buildings
In this task I wanted to try and capture enough contrast in the image so I chose to position the pinhole camera in an area that would allow me to capture enough of the sky but also make sure that the buildings were still the focal point of the image. As well as this I decided to capture the zebra crossing in the photo to contrast with the road and it looked good in both negative and positive.
Portraits
SLR
A single lens reflex camera is a camera that typically uses a mirror and prism system (hence "reflex" from the mirror's reflection) that permits the photographer to view through the lens and see exactly what will be captured. With with twin lens reflex and rangefinder cameras the viewed image could be significantly different from the final image. When the shutter button is pressed on most SLRs, the mirror flips out of the light path, allowing light to pass through to the light receptor and the image to be captured.

How to develop film
1: first of all you need to move the film from the camera into a reel and then into a container in complete darkness. 2.After that you then need to pour the correct amount of developer into the container for the right amount of time depending on the concentration of the developer.( for us it was 40ml of developer to 260ml of water for 5 mins shaking every 1 minute) 3.Then we used the stop which stops the image developing any further for 30 seconds. 4. Finally we used the fix which makes sure the image stays and doesn't fade away for 6 mins 5.Lastly we removed the now developed film and hung it out to dry. |
Film photography
What is shutter speed and how can it be used creatively? Shutter speed is the speed at which a cameras shutter opens and closes which therefor determines how much tight gets let into the lens and how bright the images therefore is. Shutter speed and can be used creatively in many ways for example if you have a quicker shutter speed you ill be able to capture objects moving much more easily and make it look as if they are frozen in time. on the other hand with a slow shutter speed you can make you're photos blur and be dark on cool and interesting ways .
Composition- composition is the way in which a photo is set up by a photographer and the different techniques and elements they use to make the photo look better or more interesting. For example the rule of thirds is a technique in which the main focal point of an image is not in the middle of the photograph and is slightly off centre to either side. Another form of composition could be making everything in the shot symmetrical which can make photos look really cool and concise and give of feelings of futuristicity
